In China, many factories would not tell you the material, 440, or 420. There is big price difference between the two popular stainless steel materials.

Generally, hardness of 420 should be around 56 in average, but in Zhejiang province, the heat treatment technique has been improved, they could produce AISI420 hardness to 58 degree, even 59 degree, so things are more complicated, hardness alone could not tell exactly the material.

Meanwhile, if Hardness for AISI420 material is too high, it does not mean a good thing, rings are more fragile than normal, easier to break.

Generally 440C material is still not popularly used, material factory would answer you “yes”, confirm they could produce it in the same chemical components. But all bearing factories says 440 will be more stable and reliable. , we had once seen a label of stainless steel ball, SUS440C, but after confirmation, the steel ball factory confirm it’s just a wrong label, material is AISI440.
